Maddalyn bit her lower lip and moved just a little closer.

She didn't want Conrad or Karl to wake and hear their late-night conversation. "I want to understand why you're so certain these marriages will end unhappily. I want ... I want to give this woman a face. Jane. Such an ordinary name. I can't picture her in my mind, and I want to."

"I don't."

His answer was so harsh, Maddalyn resigned herself to never knowing any more than she already did. "Sorry."

For several long minutes he was silent, but Maddalyn didn't lie on her back and close her eyes, didn't bother with trying to picture in her mind a perfect flower or sunset. She would watch Eric for as long as she could, forget about sleep for this one night.

"Even Conrad and Karl don't know everything," he said at last. His anger was gone, and there was a resignation in his voice that captured Maddalyn's heart. Jane's mother was giving her a hard time about settling for me, and Jane decided she didn't want to wait. Neither did I. So we forgot the planned engagement and were married in St. Louis on our way home."

Maddalyn's heart sank, and she felt physically ill. Married.

"Jane Reese Barrett," he whispered. "That was her full name. You want a picture? She was beautiful. Black hair, green eyes, twenty years old, and sought after by every eligible bachelor in Boston. I worked security for her father for six months, and that was how we met."

His voice was cold, emotionless, but with every word Maddalyn felt more anxious.

"She hated it here from the first day. It got worse as the weeks passed and I had to spend most of the day cutting. In those days, before Karl and Conrad came in with me, I had a few hired hands that lived down the hill, and we had enough orders to keep us busy every day. It was a new business. I couldn't let the few contracts I had slide, but Jane never understood that. She'd never seen her father do any actual work; everything she wanted was just .
